About whattool.io
whattool.io is an AI-powered tool discovery engine. Instead of browsing endless lists or typing keywords into a directory, you simply describe what you want to accomplish — and we find the tools that actually fit.
Why whattool.io?
The AI market is growing rapidly. New tools appear every day, and there are now tens of thousands of options — for video editing, writing, design, marketing, coding, audio, events and more. The problem isn't a lack of choice. It's orientation.
Most directories simply show you all the tools at once. You scroll, filter, compare — and lose the time you actually wanted to spend on your work. whattool.io takes a different approach: you describe your specific task in plain language, and we deliver 3 to 5 tools that genuinely fit — with a clear explanation of why each one suits your use case.
How recommendations work
When you describe a task, our AI analyzes your input and matches it against a hand-curated database of 300+ tools — selected for quality, relevance and real-world usability. The result is a ranked recommendation list with explanations tailored to your specific use case.
Under the hood, a large language model (Llama 3.3 via Groq) understands the semantic meaning of your request — not just keywords. "I want to automatically cut my event video into short Instagram clips" is correctly interpreted as a need for video repurposing tools, not a generic video search.
Who built this
whattool.io was built by Stephan Eder — an entrepreneur from Austria with a background in film production and event management. The direct trigger was frustration with the overwhelming AI tool landscape: too many tools, too little orientation, too much time lost searching instead of doing.
The idea: a tool that understands what you need — and answers directly. No sign-up, no lists, no paid placements in the recommendations.
The database
Our tool database covers 300+ hand-curated AI tools across 10 categories: Video & Film, Audio & Podcast, Marketing, Writing & Content, Design & Visuals, Code & Development, Productivity, Events, Research & Data and Customer Service. Every tool is manually reviewed and described — no auto-generated entries.
New tools are added monthly. You can submit a tool yourself via our submission form.
Transparency & affiliate links
Some links on whattool.io are affiliate links — we earn a small commission if you purchase or sign up through our link, at no extra cost to you. Sponsored listings are clearly labeled with a "Sponsored" badge. Our recommendations are based solely on relevance to your task, never on commission rates.
